See ya later, 2011

Happy New Year!!!! Here we are on the last day of 2011. Can you believe it?! I wasn't originally planning on doing a recap since I haven't been blogging for the whole year. But after looking through my archives I decided there were enough outfits/pictures I liked to do one anyway. Plus I totally love the end of year wrap ups that other blogs do, why not do one myself?

2011 was a pretty good year. It started with total mega stress as I prepared to take my qualifying exam in February, but then I passed and became an official thesis candidate, woo hoo! Later in February I got my serotonin tattoo, which is the first big tattoo I've ever gotten (and I'm hooked!) In March Jason and I decided to start drinking less, which has gone really well and I'm really proud of us! In June I celebrated my 25th birthday (quarter century, eek!) Jason took me to Shenandoah Valley and it was the first trip we've taken as a couple. In August we went to a friend's wedding in Colorado where Jason was best man. In September Jason and I celebrated our four year anniversary and went to the most delicious sushi place in town. Then I ran the Ragnar relay, which was so fun and I can't wait to do it next year!! In October I went to Italy (and Paris).

And, of course, I started blogging, which has been such a great experience. I never guessed that I would meet so many wonderful people through blogging, and I can't wait to see what 2012 brings!

6.14.2011 The outfit post that started it all! Wearing my favorite dress with my favorite shoes and holding my trusty hipster camera Holga. A perfect starting point.

A pharmer's clothes: December 30, 2011

(( dress: modcloth / tights: Target / shoes: Minnetonka ))

This is one of the lovely dresses that my mom got me for Christmas. I sent her an email about a few modcloth sale items a few weeks ago. She missed the sale, but ended up getting me three dresses from the site anyway!! So nice! Two of them didn't fit though, so I am patiently waiting to get the exchange back.  Luckily, this dress was my favorite of the bunch. I've been looking for a sweater dress for ages but always feel like they are either too bulky or too clingy. This one is the perfect in between, and nice and warm! (no, I was not freezing in these photos! Except for my feet....)

I got back to DC yesterday. It's nice to be back with Jason and the kitties, but I miss my family, friends, and snow already. Le sigh. Obviously these pictures are from when I was in Denver. I took these in City Park, which has the best views of downtown, in my opinion. My mom and my step-dad got married right at this lake. And you can see my high school peaking up on the left side of the picture below. It is the shorter building next to that monstrous condo building.

If you're wondering if moccasins are good snow shoes let me tell you that no, no they are not. I don't think my feet warmed up for a good two hours after this. So worth it though.

Snow, you are the best!
Please come visit here in DC.
Love, Hannah.

A pharmer's clothes: December 27, 2011

This is what a happy Hannah looks like. Snow!!! YAY!! There was a mini blizzard in Denver a few days before I got here. I was worried that it would all be melted by the time I got here, but look at how much is left! Yay! It has been so warm in DC, I'm slightly concerned that this may be the only snow I see all winter. I literally rolled around in it. No, really, I did.

Did you have a Merry Christmas? I had yet more flight drama, but finally made it to Denver, albeit a few hours late. I got some pretty great presents too, including a few dresses that I am stoked to show off here on the blog. Is it lame that I thought of that almost immediately when I got them? Blog slave, yep.

Hope you all are having a lovely day today! And if you don't celebrate Christmas, hope you are having a great weekend!

A pharmer's clothes: December 23, 2011

Happy Christmas Adam!! I can't believe Christmas is only two days away. Maybe because I'm currently in San Diego where it is 70 degrees and sunny. I am usually all for cold weather during the winter, but I can definitely make an exception when on the beach!

This outfit is obviously from before I came out to California. I wore this last weekend when Jason and I went to zoo lights. It was so fun! I’d never been to the zoo in DC before, and we were in the mood to do something Christmasy, so it was perfect. My favorite part was seeing the choirs from local schools caroling. I remember doing that when I was younger and I loved it. Without a doubt, choir was my favorite thing about high school and those memories will always mean a lot to me.

I hope you all are able to spend some time with friends and family this weekend. Aren’t holidays the best? I’m so happy to be here in San Diego with my dad. I was so bummed because we were supposed to fly out on Wednesday, but our flight ended up getting cancelled because of weather. Super sad considering that I don’t get the chance to see my dad that often. But we made it out safely so no complaints! Tonight we are heading down to the beach to have a bonfire and watch the sunset, then to somewhere fun for dinner. Tomorrow we are going ice-skating at Hotel del Coronado. Apparently you can see the ocean from the ice! Something about ice-skating on the beach in 70 degree weather sounds too wonderfully hilarious to pass up.

DIY gift boxes

One of my favorite things about Christmas is wrapping presents. It's a bit silly if you think about it, since the receiver only enjoys your pretty wrapping for a few moments before tearing it off to get to the goody inside. Regardless, there is just something about a pretty present under a pretty tree that warms my heart. This year, I decided to make some gift box/Christmas card hybrids for the family members that I don't usually give material things to. They would also be perfect for something small like a gift card, jewelry or a candle.

What you need:
1 sheet of cardstock (I recommend 12x12 scrapbook paper. You can buy it by the sheet at any craft store in a billion fun colors!)
Scissors
Decorations

Note: sorry all the pictures are in black and white...my camera could not handle the redness of my paper. The pictures came out so over-saturated that you can't see where the folds are!

Start by folding your paper in half, then fold each half toward the center making four sections. (To make your folds extra crisp rub the fold with the back side of a spoon or the handle of your scissors.

Turn the paper 90 degrees and repeat. Now you have a sheet with 16 squares folded into it.

Cut off one off one row of squares so your dimensions are now 3x4 squares.

On one of the sides with 3 squares, cut the corner squares into triangles, and then cut along the seam of the square so the triangles move freely.

Now you're ready to fold! Fold the corners of the box together, pushing the middle section towards the inside of the box. Crease the inside section really well.

Fold the triangle flaps into the edge of the box. Folding the flaps in the first time takes a bit of practice/patience, but it gets easier.

You're done!

Add finishing touches by decorating the box as you like. I wrote a little message on the inside, and then decorated the outside with stickers. Finish it off with a little ribbon or washi tape to keep the box together.

Aspen approves.

A pharmer's clothes: December 13, 2011

I know it's not all that drastic (okay, it's hardly noticeable), but I love how my hair came out! These pictures really don't do it justice, but I have the smallest bits of pink throughout. I colored very thin sections, and when I wear it curly I actually have an all pink curl or two! Love. It has faded quite a lot already though. Sad. But that means I can dye it again soon...next week I'm thinking purple! Weee fun hair! I'm so happy I bit the bullet and finally did it myself.

Is it only Tuesday? This week has been way too busy/stressful between work and my car troubles. But the good news is they got the new part in today. Yay! Hopefully Jetta will be all fixed up by tomorrow and we can be reunited at last.

Reunited and it feel so good...

A pharmer's clothes: December 12, 2011

Sad times in pharmerville. My car is still in the shop. Poor Jetta. She needs a new ABS control module and it is taking a long time for the part to get in. Meanwhile, I am carless. Thus, this weekend Jason and I embarked on a six-mile journey to buy stuff to bleach/color my hair (do I have the bestest boyfriend or what???) On the way we stopped at Barnes & Noble to pick up a few books and Goodwill, where I snagged an awesome velvet dress! We also tried to snap some outfit pics, but I was pretty underwhelmed with all of them. This is the only one I like:

+1 to anyone who knows the function of this weird triangle pull up bar thing.

I felt like this outfit was very winter/Chrismas-y, so we tried taking a few pics next to the tree! Velcro of course had to make a cameo (or Velcro's butt, I should say). He must be a fan of my cat sweater.

How was your weekend? Other than our hair trek, my weekend was spent relaxing...and tutoring, of course. I ended up renting a car to tutor yesterday, which was way more hassle than it was worth. I hope my car is ready soon. It's finals time so I'm crazy busy with students every night this week, and I already had to cancel on my student tonight. Please be ready soon Jetta!

PS pics of the hair are coming tomorrow! It really doesn't look much different. I am super scared of frying my hair while bleaching it, so I was very, very conservative. But for a first step I think it came out well! In the meanwhile, here is an in-process pic:
